Do You Need a Car in Zadar? The Honest Answer

Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read

Compact cars parked beside pale stone buildings outside Zadar Old Town

The answer first

No: for a short stay centred on Zadar Old Town, a car is more burden than help. The peninsula is walkable, the airport has a direct bus, and island boat trips leave from the city. Hire one if Zadar is your base for several independent day trips, especially Paklenica, Nin or inland villages, or if your accommodation is outside the bus network. A family carrying beach equipment may also value the boot. For one organised excursion, leave the driving to the tour.

Where a car adds nothing

The Sea Organ, Roman Forum, market and waterfront all sit on or beside the Old Town peninsula. Parking there does not shorten the visit: you still explore on foot, while access and spaces become the problem. If your room is near the centre and your plan is cafés, museums and an evening sunset, choose accommodation carefully and spend the car budget elsewhere.

A bus runs from the airport into the city. Journey time, ticket and timetable are on the airport’s own website; check them against your flight rather than assuming a late arrival is covered.

When hiring one makes sense

A car changes the trip when you want two or three places that do not share one convenient tour: an early walk in Paklenica, a beach stop near Nin and a rural dinner, for example. You control the departure, can carry walking shoes and wet beach gear, and are not committed to a group’s return time. It also helps families staying in an apartment beyond the centre, provided the accommodation genuinely includes parking.

The calculation is not merely daily rate versus bus fare. Add parking, fuel, tolls where applicable, a possible additional-driver charge and any child seat. Then compare the total with transfers and tour seats for everyone travelling. A couple staying two nights in the Old Town usually gains little; four people spending a week exploring northern Dalmatia can use the car every day.

Cases where the answer changes

For cruise passengers, the day is too short to collect and return a rental simply to see central Zadar. For a traveller without a driving licence, the airport bus, local buses and organised day trips cover the obvious itinerary. With a toddler, door-to-door transport may be valuable, but request the correct child seat in advance and verify the supplier’s terms. Never assume a named seat type is automatically included.

An island day is not automatically a reason to hire. Passenger ferries and booked boat trips can be easier than taking a vehicle. If you intend to put a rental car on a ferry, read the contract first because permission and coverage differ between suppliers.

Clear recommendation

Stay car-free for two or three city-focused days. Hire only for the block of days when the route genuinely leaves Zadar; do not pay for a vehicle that waits while you walk the peninsula or spend a day at sea.
