Sea Organ and Old Town in Zadar: Walk It Yourself or Take a Guided Tour?

The answer first
You do not need a tour to see the Sea Organ. It is free, open around the clock and sits on the waterfront at the tip of the Old Town peninsula. A guided walk makes sense if you want the Roman and medieval layers of the Old Town explained in two hours, and the €20 small-group walk with Sea Organ, Forum and tastings is the best-rated of the three options below for that: 4.9 stars from 104 reviews.
What the Sea Organ is
Architect Nikola Bašić built the Sea Organ and opened it on 15 April 2005. It is a series of stone steps leading into the water, with 35 pipes of different lengths running along about 70 metres of seafront. Waves push air through the pipes and produce long, low, slightly eerie chords. Nothing is amplified and nothing is scheduled.
That has one practical consequence: the sound depends on the sea. On a flat, calm day you will hear little. A bit of swell, or the wash of a passing boat, brings it to life. Do not judge it after a minute in glassy water.
Next to it, Bašić also made the Greeting to the Sun, a circle of about 22 metres set into the paving. It is made of glass plates with solar cells underneath, and it lights up after dark. Both are free. Most visitors go around sunset and again after dark; the Zadar sunset guide covers the timing.
What the Old Town holds in two hours
The Old Town is a small peninsula that you can cross in ten minutes and spend a day in. The Roman Forum, the round church of St Donatus (9th century) and the city walls are all inside a few hundred metres. Opening times and ticket prices for St Donatus and the museums change by season, so check them on the day rather than relying on a printed guide.
On your own you can see all of it for the price of a coffee. What you miss without a guide is mostly context: why Roman columns are built into later walls, what was destroyed in the Second World War, which of the gates is Venetian.
The guided options
| Tour | Price per person | Rating | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-Hour Old Town Walk, Sea Organ, Forum & Tastings | €20 | 4.9 from 104 | 2 hours |
| Virtual Reality Guided History Walking Tour | €30 | 4.5 from 89 | 2 hours |
| Submarine Nemo, Yellow Semi-Submarine Undersea Tour | €22.50 | 4.1 from 539 | 45 minutes |
The €20 walk is a small group with a local guide and includes a tasting of maraschino liqueur and cheese. The virtual reality tour puts you in the Roman Forum and, according to the listing, shows the Second World War bombing and places usually closed to the public. It costs half as much again, and it is rated lower. Nemo is not a walk at all: it is a 45-minute ride on a semi-submarine that shows the Sea Organ from the water. It is the least informative of the three and probably the most fun for children.
The Old Town category lists 18 offers in total, from €8 — walks, tastings and other city experiences; see the Old Town walking tours page for all of them.
Which one for whom
- First day, short on time, curious about history: the €20 walk.
- You have already walked the peninsula and want something different: the virtual reality tour.
- Travelling with children: the Sea Organ and the sunset light show for free, Nemo as a treat. More ideas are in the Zadar with kids guide.
- Just want the Sea Organ: skip all of the above.
Our recommendation
Walk to the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun yourself in the evening, and book the 2-hour Old Town walk for the morning of your first day.
