Zadar Old Town Walking Tours & Tastings

Zadar’s old town sits on a small peninsula, so everything is within walking distance: the Roman Forum, St Donatus, the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun at the tip. A guided walk takes one to two and a half hours, and several add a maraschino tasting.

Good to know: You can see most of the old town on your own in half a day; a guide adds the stories, not the access. Tours start at €8 (a self-guided phone tour), guided walks at about €21, and the sea-organ promenade is free, so decide whether you want information or just the sunset.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plitvice a realistic day trip from Zadar?

Yes, but it is a long one. The lakes are about 135 km away, 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and the guided day tours in our list run around ten hours. Krka is the shorter option at about an hour from Zadar.

Can I swim at the Krka waterfalls?

Not at Skradinski Buk, the main waterfall. Swimming there has been banned since January 2021. Check the park rules on the day if you were counting on a swim, and do not book a Krka trip for that reason alone.

How do I get to the Kornati from Zadar?

By boat. Full-day trips take about nine hours and leave in the morning, fast boats do it in four to five hours. Public boats and catamarans go to Sali on Dugi Otok in 45 to 60 minutes, which is the island next to the Kornati.

Where do the boat tours leave from?

Most leave from the waterfront at the old town, but not all. A few listings in our stock start in other ports, so read the meeting point on the booking page before you pay.

Should I base myself in Zadar or Split?

Zadar is closer to the Kornati, the Zrmanja canyon and Plitvice. Split is the better base for Hvar and the Blue Cave. Krka can be done from either, so choose by what else you want to see. We run a separate site for Split.

What is the Sea Organ?

A set of pipes under the steps of the old town promenade that plays with the waves. Next to it the Greeting to the Sun lights up at sunset. Both are free and you can walk there without a tour.
