Plitvice or Krka from Zadar: Which National Park If You Only Have One Day?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
The answer first
Choose Plitvice if you want the bigger, more famous park and can spend a long day on the road. Choose Krka if you want less driving, a lower price and an easier day. Both are worth the trip; with one free day they are not equal in effort.
The two parks in numbers
| Plitvice Lakes | Krka | |
|---|---|---|
| Road from Zadar | about 135 km, roughly 2 hours | roughly 50 to 60 minutes to the main entrances |
| Adult ticket, high summer | €40 until 4 p.m. (Jun to Aug), €25 after | rises with the season; €7 is the low-season price |
| Adult ticket, April, May, October | €23 | check the park’s current price list |
| Guided day trip from Zadar | €75 with tickets, 10 hours | €40 with Skradin boat ride, 8 to 9 hours |
| Boat inside the ticket | electric boat and panoramic train | boat between Skradin and Skradinski buk |
The Plitvice ticket prices are the park’s published adult day prices. For Krka the park changes its table by season and publishes it as a price list, so look at it on the day you plan to go. Everything about distance is approximate and depends on the day’s traffic.
What the day feels like
At Plitvice, a ten-hour tour with about four hours on the road leaves around six hours in the park. The walk is along wooden walkways between many lakes and falls, and the boat and train are part of the ticket. At Krka the road takes about an hour each way, so a day of the same length leaves far more room: time to walk the boardwalks at Skradinski buk, take the boat and eat in Skradin without watching the clock.
Which costs more
Driving yourself, a July day at Plitvice costs €40 per adult for the ticket plus about €10 per car for five hours of parking at €2 an hour, before fuel. Krka’s ticket that month is on the park’s price list. On the guided side the difference is plain: Plitvice Lakes Guided Day Tour with Tickets at €75 against Krka Waterfalls Day Tour with Skradin Boat Ride at €40, where the entry question still needs checking on the booking page.
Swimming
Do not choose Krka for a swim at the main waterfall: swimming at Skradinski buk has been banned since 2021. Check the park’s current rules for other spots.
Who should choose which
- First time in Croatia, one big sight to tick off: Plitvice, with the tour that includes tickets.
- A tight budget or short on energy: Krka.
- Travelling with small children or a slow walker: the shorter drive to Krka is the easier one. The guide for Plitvice and the guide for Krka cover the practical side of each.
- Staying more than a few days: do both, on different days.
Our recommendation
With one day and no strong preference, take Krka for the easier day and choose Plitvice when you want the bigger sight and are happy to spend roughly four hours of the day on the road.
